SMILO Islands Fund 2024

Blue has partnered with the Sustainable Small Islands Organisation, or “SMILO”, to support the Islands Fund, a fund that supports community-led solutions for small sustainable islands. The fund finances innovative, concrete field operations that advance island development while strengthening resilient marine ecosystems. The winner projects of 2024 island funds are below.

Brava, Cado Verde

The project focuses on restoring a trail connecting Mato Riba to Fontainhas, the island’s highest point. It includes establishing an information centre, a rest area with furniture made from invasive species, and an innovative water harvesting system to support reforestation with endemic species. Educational panels will raise awareness about local biodiversity while encouraging responsible tourism.

Saint-Honorat, France

The project aims to support the Abbaye de Lérins in its efforts to combat invasive species, such as the Black Rat and monitor biodiversity on the island.

Molene, France

The project aims to replace the polluting septic tank system on the island of Molène, located in Brittany, with a phyto-purification system. Led by the Culture Breizh’ilienne association, it is part of the creation of an eco-responsible community hub focused on sustainable tourism and environmental awareness.

Sainte Marguerite, France

Expand a Motorised Equipment Prohibition Zone (ZIEM) at the heart of which is an underwater eco-museum with the aim of strengthening the conservation of marine ecosystems and protecting this unique site from recreational boating by installing ecological anchors, new buoyage and awareness campaigns
